In general, ceilings that are painted a lighter colour than your walls feel higher whilst those that are painted a darker shade feel lower. Lower doesnt have to be a negative though. As with all colors you pick make sure you consider how much natural light comes into the room during those hours when you are most often using it. Bright sunlight reflecting off a soft pink or bright blue ceiling creates a feeling of airiness whereas soft candlelight or a lamplight in a red room makes for a very rich sumptious glow.
The old rule that with low ceilings you must apply a light color can now be disregarded. By simply applying a dark base and then using a glaze of the same color over it, it will soften the effect and keep the ceiling from overpowering the whole room.
